Wounded Gauteng traffic wardens hailed as heroes by Lesufi
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the five traffic wardens who were shot and wounded in Daveyton on Sunday “took a bullet for Gauteng residents”.
Lesufi spoke during his visit to Alberton Netcare Hospital, where the five wounded wardens are receiving medical treatment.
The wardens came under fire while conducting a routine patrol along the railway line.
They were ambushed by around 12 suspects allegedly armed with high-calibre weapons, including AK-47 rifles and pistols.
Lesufi believes the incident demonstrated the suspects’ utter disregard for the rule of law.
“Our wardens, together with law enforcement officers, serve daily on the frontlines to ensure the safety and security of our communities. We will not be deterred from doing our work as law enforcement in the province,” he said.
“They took a bullet for us because 12 to 20 people who are armed, we don't know where they would have ended up if they were not disturbed by these young men and women.”
“We are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and face the full might of the law. I commend the wardens for their bravery and commitment under such dangerous circumstances and wish them a speedy recovery.”
The South African Police Service in Daveyton are investigating a case of attempted murder.
No arrests have been made.
