Higher Education and Training Minister Nobuhle Nkabane has confirmed that the person who was shot and killed at the Water Sisulu University (WSU) on Tuesday was, in fact, a registered student.

This comes after the University released a statement saying the deceased was not a registered student or staff at their university.

Visiting the WSU Mthatha campus in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, the Minister admitted to the failure of her department to do due diligence in checking the registration status of the deceased student.

“When I saw this matter trending on the news, I asked her (WSU Vice Chancellor) to brief me, but what she said is that the student was unregistered,” said Nkabane.

“The unfortunate part is that as the department, we issued the statement without doing a quality check to see if the student was registered or not.”

Nkabane explained that the Department found out through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) records that the last payment made to both the student and the university was late last year.

“I can affirm today, that he was indeed a student.”

It’s alleged a staff member opened fire on a group of protesting students in the early hours of Tuesday morning, killing one person and wounding two others.

According to the students, they embarked on a protest after their complaints about challenges at the residence went unanswered.
