The Western Cape has been without a permanent police commissioner since Khombinkosi Jula was transferred to KwaZulu-Natal in.
In 2017, Matakata temporarily replaced Berning Ntlemeza as head of the Hawks after a high court ruling that he had lied under oath and lacked integrity.
She was replaced by Godfrey Lebeya a year late in May 2018.
Cele says Matakata will bring stability to the Western Cape police force.
"She's not a person that we throwing in the dogs. She will stabilise the thing. She will have the support of everyone.”
