'Young mothers need be educated about child abandonment'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A Glenwood-based safe home for abandoned babies says more education is needed so that people who're unable to care for their little ones know that there are alternatives.
The safe home Holah spoke to Newswatch after another newborn baby was found abandoned in a building in central Durban yesterday.
The baby was found in a toilet wrapped in plastic bags.
The little boy, who was deprived of oxygen, was rescued by paramedics.
He is recovering.
This brings to three the number of unwanted babies left by their mothers in public places in recent months.
Leaan Lorrance feels these lessons can be taught at school level so that young mothers know what to do should they find themselves in this situation.
Lorrance says most of these women don't know what to do.
"It's very sad, especially because there are alternative ways of abandoning your child. There are several baby safe homes in KwaZulu-Natal and I think there just needs to be more education on where they are located. There are also social workers who are there to help and assist with giving up children for adoption," says Lorrance.
