Zandile tells court how she pleaded with Meyiwa ‘to keep his eyes open’

An emotional Zandile Khumalo explained to the High Court in Pretoria on Friday how she pleaded with Senzo Meyiwa to keep his eyes open while they rushed him to the hospital.
Khumalo, who is the state’s latest witness, became visibly emotional as she recounted the drive from the home where Meyiwa was shot to Botshelong Hospital in Vosloorus.
Five men are on trial for the former Bafana Bafana captain’s murder in 2014.
“I also kept on touching his face and shaking his face and said ‘Senzo stay alive, keep your eyes open’ as we are about to arrive at the hospital,” Zandile told the court.
Khumalo also detailed a fight which broke out in hospital between her older sister Kelly Khumalo and Meyiwa’s wife Mandisa Mkhize.
She testified that Mkhize and her friends attacked her sister when they arrived at the hospital.
“It was Mandisa as they walked in and she was in front together with her friends. Now upon their arrival, they went straight to Kelly and they started assaulting Kelly and pulled out her braids off her head.”
Khumalo’s evidence has contradicted that of an earlier witness, Mthokozisi Thwala.
Thwala, who was part of the group of people who were at the house when Meyiwa was shot, told the court that Mandisa did not take part in any scuffle at the hospital.
On his version of events, Mandisa and Kelly embraced each other.
The trial will resume in June.
