His appearance followed an incident on Thursday, February 18, spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

“On that day, it is alleged that the suspect and his three accomplices were driving a Toyota Avanza trying to evade arrest after they allegedly committed a business robbery in Hartbeesfontein.”

Highway patrol officers spotted the car in Potchefstroom at about 4.30pm and a chase ensued after the alleged robbers refused to stop, he said.

“During the chase the suspects started shooting at the police and a shoot-out ensued. One of the suspects fell out of the moving vehicle and was arrested while [the] others managed to escape. The suspect did not sustain [any] injury.”

The car was later found abandoned in Ikageng. The arrested man would also face a business robbery charge related to the Hartbeesfontein robbery. He and his three accomplices allegedly robbed a local shop of an undisclosed amount of cash and tablet phones.

Police were still searching for the other three men, also believed to be Zimbabwean nationals. The community was urged to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the three men by contacting detectives on 082-373-7650, Mokgwabone said.
