Zuma parts ways with lawyers a month before corruption trial
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
The case against former president Jacob Zuma may have hit a snag after he parted ways with his lawyers.
Mabuza Attorneys filed a notice to withdraw from Zuma's defence team on Wednesday.
It's unclear at this stage what caused the split.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it's aware of the latest developments.
"The NPA acknowledges receipt of correspondence from Mabuza Attorneys whose content can be confirmed with them," NPA spokesperson Sipho Ngwema said.
But Ngwena added they're ready to forge ahead with the trial.
"Suffice to say, the state remains ready to proceed with the trial from 17 May 2021."
The corruption trial against Zuma and French arms company Thales is expected to start on 17 May and run through to 20 June.
He's accused of receiving bribes worth R4 million from Thales during the arms deal in the late 1990s.
The NPA asked for the trial to run for two terms as it plans to call more than 216 witnesses.
