Zuma-Sambudla set to go on trial for July unrest
Alleged unrest instigator Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is set to go on trial in November.
The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma is facing charges of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence linked to the 2021 July unrest.
Prosecutors believe posts she made on social media fuelled the riots that left over 300 people dead in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The court heard that Zuma-Sambudla approached the Director of Public Prosecutions in KZN earlier this month, asking for her case to be scrapped.
The request was denied.
Her attorney, Advocate Dali Mpofu, told the court on Thursday that they’ve now decided to approach the national prosecutions head, Shamila Batoyi, with the same request and expect a response next month.
Senior State Prosecutor Yuri Gangai asked that, in the interim, the matter be set down for a pre-trial conference in August, with the trial set for November.
Gangai maintained that the investigations are complete and ready to proceed.
Mpofu told the court that - based on the outcome of the application to the NDPP - it would either end the matter or they would be ready for trial.
