Both clubs have 10 points from four matches but Pirates occupy first place on goal difference.

Pirates ended the eight-season dominance of Sundowns in the Premiership last season, and the early signs are that they could be the main contenders again.

Sundowns carved open the AmaZulu defence continuously and veteran substitute Themba Zwane wasted two late chances to make the winning margin even wider.

Leon scored in the first half with a volley and then after half-time with a close-range shot. Teboho Mokoena, Tashreeq Matthews and Bennet Mokoena were Sundowns' other scorers.

Zimbabwean Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya notched both AmaZulu goals in the second half to become the early pacesetter in the Golden Boot competition with five goals.

Kaizer Chiefs, who last won Africa's richest championship in 2015, slipped one place to third after twice coming from behind in a 2-2 draw at Richards Bay in wet Durban.

A blunder by goalkeeper Brandon Petersen -- considered unlucky to miss out on the South Africa 2026 World Cup squad -- gifted Nqaba Xulu the first of his two goals for Bay.

On Tuesday, Pirates rested many regulars but still beat Sekhukhune United 2-0 in Soweto through goals from Boitumelo Radiopane and Oswin Appollis.
