Guptill picks Proteas

MARTIN GUPTILL scored his maiden ODI century against the Castle Lager Proteas and his ninth overall to set up the Black Caps for a series-levelling victory by 8 wickets with 33 balls to spare in the second Momentum ODI at Senwes Park on Sunday.

It has been a wonderful tour for Guptill who won the man of the match award in the second KFC T20 International as well as the Man of that Series award.

His partnership of 126 in 28.3 with Tom Latham (64 off 81 balls, 8 fours) effectively killed off the target after the Proteas, having won the toss, only managed to make 204 in their innings. Guptill finished unbeaten with 103 (134 balls, 9 fours and 3 sixes) and finished off the job in partnership with George Worker in an unbroken third wicket stand of 67 in 13 overs.

Those partnerships told the story of the match as the Proteas only managed one partnership in excess of 50 when Farhaan Behardien (70 off 87 balls, 5 fours and a six) and Vernon Philander added 54 for the seventh wicket in 12.5 overs. This was Behardien’s fourth ODI half-century and a career best for the Proteas. He was the only one of the South African top order to come to terms with the slow-paced pitch.

The Proteas got themselves into early trouble when Adam Milne dismissed both the opening batsmen, Hashim Amla and Morne van Wyk cheaply. Thereafter it was largely one-way traffic as the recalled Dougie Bracewell finished with the best figures of 3/31.

The Proteas brought in Aaron Phangiso as a second spinner in place of Kagiso Rabada in the only change to the winning side from the first ODI and he and Imran Tahir both bowled well to take the two wickets to fall.

The deciding ODI will be played at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Wednesday (12h30 CAT).
