‘A dream come true’ - Makhanya joins Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers

Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya has spoken of his excitement at joining Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers ahead of the new season.
The 22-year-old has joined the club ahead of the start of the Scottish Premiership campaign, becoming the eighth addition of the summer transfer window.
The defender signed from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union on an initial four-year deal, with the option of an additional year, subject to international clearance.
Makhanya, who started his career at Stellenbosch, moved to the USA in 2023.
He initially featured for Philadelphia Union II, earning himself a senior debut in February 2025 against Orlando City. Impressing in the MLS, Makhanya established himself as a first-team regular, making 49 appearances in all competitions.
The centre-back also made his Bafana Bafana debut in May 2026 in a friendly against Nicaragua and was subsequently called up to their squad for the World Cup.

However, the defender did not feature for South Africa at the tournament.
“I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started,” Makhanya told the club’s website.
"For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”
Rangers Manager Derek McInnes said Makhanya is a player they have watched closely.
“We feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.
“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments. He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”
