Sharks centre Ward suspended for five Super Rugby games

Sharks centre Jeremy Ward was banned on Tuesday for five Super Rugby matches after making a dangerous off-the-ball tackle during a loss to the Bulls in Pretoria last weekend.

The 23-year-old marred his first start of the season for the Durban franchise by lifting opposition winger Rosko Specman and dropping him dangerously during the first half of Saturday's game.

While none of the referees noticed the incident, Ward was cited after an official later watched a replay of the round 4 match.

A statement from the organisers said the foul could have carried a 10-week ban, but mitigating factors included the relative inexperience of Ward, his remorse and a guilty plea.

He will miss both home matches against the Melbourne Rebels and the Bulls, the trip to Johannesburg to play the Lions and the Jaguares' and the Queensland Reds' visits to Kings Park.

Sharks have an obvious inside centre replacement in Springbok Andre Esterhuizen, who wore the No. 12 shirt in the first three rounds before being dropped to the bench.

Robert Du Preez's outfit have won twice and lost twice this season, placing them fifth in the combined standings and second in the South African conference.
