Alive to tell the tale: SA man almost swallowed by whale
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
This video scared all of us! Thankfully, the man who was almost swallowed by a whale is alive to tell Martin Bester his story!
A Port Elizabeth man narrowly escaped with his life after being taken by a whale. Yes, a whale!
Rainer Schimpf, 51, was on a trip with a tour operator which takes tourists on a once-in-a-lifetime whale watching adventure in Algoa Bay.
This was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime affair as Schimpf was filmed with his legs hanging out of a whale’s mouth!
Schilmpf told Martin Bester he is grateful the whale spat him out. "The incident happened out of nowhere. We got in the water and the next moment something grabbed me from the left. There was no time to think. I noticed when I felt pressure on the hip. I luckily knew that the whale’s throat was too small to swallow a human being. The whale probably realised this is something that should not be in his mouth."

"How does it feel to be in a whale’s mouth?" Martin Bester asked.
"It feels like someone hugs you a bit harder," Schimpf revealed.
