Among the many crimes that plague South Africa, cellphone theft is one that has almost become a common occurrence.

Although it has become somewhat of a norm, it remains shocking when it happens, especially if you or someone you know falls victim.

According to Rekord, a worrying number of cellphone theft incidents have been on a steady incline in Centurion.

Between August 1 and October 31, cellphone thefts increased significantly compared to the same period last year.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said that Fridays and Saturdays seem to be the peak times for these crimes, with most incidents occurring between 3pm and 9pm.

Van Dyk highlighted a few areas that have become hotspots for these crimes, including the corner of Hendrik Verwoerd and Rooihuiskraal Roads in Rooihuiskraal North near Mall@Reds, Bothrill Avenue in The Reeds, and along Lenchen Avenue.

"The modus operandi is consistent. Suspects often grab phones from victims while they're waiting for orders in restaurants, walking into malls, or walking along streets. They then flee the scene in a waiting vehicle," said Van Dyk.

And if you think reporting these incidents is pointless, think again.

Van Dyk urged the public to continue reporting cellphone theft, even if they feel nothing will be done about it.

"If incidents are not reported, it creates a false sense of security in the area, which is clearly not the case," he said.

"Without proper reporting, it is difficult for us to know where and when to focus our resources."
