Checkers brings first smart trolleys and automated checkout to popular Gauteng estate
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
A whole new shopping experience in Gauteng is here!
Your next grocery run could look a little different with Gauteng's first-of-its-kind Checkers store.
Checkers’ new upmarket store at Shopping on Eastway in Midstream Estate is set to launch Xpress smart trolleys within the next few days, becoming the first store in Gauteng to offer the technology.
Shopping on Eastway opened on 1 October 2026.
Alongside a dedicated sushi bar, wine section and wellness area, customers will soon be able to try a new way of filling their baskets and paying for their groceries.
Created by the ShopriteX innovation team, the Xpress Trolley lets shoppers scan and pack their products as they move through the store.
It also keeps track of their spending and allows them to pay without heading to a traditional till.
Testing began with Shoprite employees at Checkers Hyper Brackenfell in Cape Town in mid-August.
How does the smart trolley work?
Customers scan their card beneath the trolley’s screen, place the supplied shopping bags inside and begin shopping. Each item must be scanned before being packed into a bag.
As products are added, the screen shows a running total, along with product details and personalised promotions. That means shoppers can keep track of their bill throughout their grocery run.
According to Daily Investor, the screen can also help you locate products in the store.
When you have everything you need, you head to a dedicated checkout lane and pay on the trolley using the bank card linked to your Checkers Sixty60 profile.
From there, you collect your printed till slip and exit through the checkout gate.
A concierge is on hand for anyone who needs help along the way.
Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Shoprite Group, said the pilot aims to put more control in customers’ hands.
“This pilot allows us to reimagine the in-store journey using technology for a more frictionless shopping experience."
Schreuder said the technology could also help Checkers Sixty60’s in-store shoppers fulfil orders faster and with greater accuracy.
“The Xpress Trolley enhances convenience, improves speed, and keeps customers in control from the moment they enter the store to the moment they leave.”
