"I know that if your car breaks down on the R300 or N2, the chance that you'll survive is small," said Sergio Borgches after a near-deadly experience on the R300 between Mitchells Plain and Browns Farms, Cape Town.

While driving in his red dune buggy, the 46-year-old saw a group of children who he thought were trying to cross the road.

But he quickly realised they were aiming something at his car, and at that moment one of them threw a rock, which went through his windscreen, almost striking him in the head.

"When I realised they were aiming at me, I braced myself for the impact," he told Netwerk24.

Borgches shared video footage of the incident on his Facebook page as a warning to other motorists.

“Guys, be careful on the R300. I know it's not the safest road, but this caught me off guard… just a warning to others," he wrote.

Borgches told Netwerk24 that the thugs were aiming to kill him.

The victim was reportedly on his way to Somerset West for a delivery when the incident occurred.

Luckily, Borgches did not sustain any serious injuries. He only suffered "some cuts from the glass."

He was also wearing glasses at the time, which prevented shards from entering his eyes.

Borgches was driving at about 100 km/h when the rock went through his windscreen — it would have hit his head had he not dodged the object.

"Everything happened so fast. A lot of people ask why I didn't turn in their direction… you don't think about something like that. I just dodged and waited for what was coming."

"If that rock had hit my head, I don't know what would have happened.

Others also came forward on Facebook, claiming to have experienced similar incidents on the road.

"Oh my God, I experienced the same thing. Thank God the Uber driver didn't stop. Same R300 at 8pm," said Fiona Busakwe.

"Got me on the same spot 2 years back. I was on a bike," commented Drickes de Bruyn.
