First impressions matter, which is why it's important to carefully consider what you wear when trying to land a new job.

As you'd expect, there are right and wrong outfit choices for an interview, but it might not be what you think.

Yes, wearing a super short skirt or your 15-year-old sneakers that are falling apart is obviously a bad idea, but there are also simpler clothing items that can send the wrong message.

According to workplace behaviour expert Dr George Sik, the wrong outfit could have a big impact on your chances of getting the job.

"First impressions are made in as little as seven seconds.

"Your clothes aren't the whole story, but they are the frame through which the rest of you is judged."

"The wrong choices can speak volumes before you’ve even said a word."

Dress code specialist Julian Nelson, founder of workplace footwear retailer A Fine Pair of Shoes, also shared the five most common outfit mistakes people make in interviews:

1. White or busy patterns

Wearing white can seem overly clinical, while loud prints create visual chaos and suggest disorganisation.

2. Shoes you can't walk in

Uncomfortable or inappropriate shoes distract and imply poor preparation, while smart, comfortable loafers show confidence.

3. Distracting jewellery

Noisy or oversized jewellery steals attention, so choose subtle, stylish pieces that complement rather than compete.

4. An overstuffed or scruffy bag

A messy or worn bag hints at disorganisation, whereas a sleek, professional one signals respect and readiness.

5. Smartwatches

Checking notifications mid-interview looks distracted, so leave smartwatches behind and opt for a classic timepiece instead.
