If you have been thinking about an international career move, 2026 might be your year.

With the local economy feeling the pressure, young jobseekers are increasingly looking beyond our borders. It turns out there are a few countries actively seeking South African talent.

According to the latest Job Market Trends report from online recruiter Pnet, five specific countries are currently on a major recruitment drive for South African skills.

The top five nations actively scouting for local talent are:

  • Australia
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Holland
  • Namibia
  • Botswana

While Australia remains the primary destination for those looking to relocate, Saudi Arabia is catching up fast. Holland follows, along with our immediate neighbours, Namibia and Botswana.

However, amid the current Middle Eastern conflict, now might not be the best time for travelling to the Middle East.

“This data signals a competitive cross-border talent landscape,” says Pnet’s Head of Data, Anja Bates.

The South African reports that it is not just about degrees and diplomas. Global employers are also looking for the South African work ethic.

Previous reports have highlighted that a natural drive and the ease of working within multi-ethnic groups make South Africans the “perfect fit” for international teams.

Pnet notes that one of our biggest global strengths is our ability to thrive within multiracial and ethnically diverse environments.

Bates further explains that the country produces top-tier experts, particularly in engineering, mining, IT, finance, and operational sectors.

Skills in highest demand

South Africans are especially sought after in:

  • Engineering
  • Mining
  • IT
  • Finance
  • Operations
  • Technical trades such as plumbing, electrical, construction and maintenance
  • Healthcare

For first-world companies, hiring a high-level South African professional is also a smart financial move, as even a premium local salary remains cost-effective by international standards.

While Australia holds the top spot for total volume, other regions are seeing rapid growth.

Over the last year, job advertisements from Saudi Arabia aimed at South Africans skyrocketed by 174%.

Holland is not far behind, showing a 61% year-on-year increase in recruitment interest.

What jobs are they looking for?

In Australia, the focus is on technical trades and engineering. If you work in maintenance, construction, plumbing or electrical services, you are in high demand. This is driven by a major infrastructure push and a serious skills gap Down Under, where South African trade qualifications are highly respected and closely aligned with local standards.

In Saudi Arabia, employers are recruiting heavily for healthcare workers and engineers. To sweeten the deal, many of these roles offer tax-free salaries and relocation packages that are becoming difficult for young South African professionals to ignore.
