When it comes to manners, politeness and social etiquette, different countries and cultures have different standards of what good manners really mean.

For the most part, good manners are defined as the socially acceptable ways in which people treat each other, including politeness, respect and consideration.

While good manners remain subjective and can vary across different demographic groups, there are a few nations that are universally praised for being well-mannered, with one in particular standing out.

Speaking to LADbible, etiquette expert William Hanson, known for his social media videos in which he advises on how to apply good manners in the modern world, revealed which nation he believes has the best manners.

According to Hanson, Japan is the country with the most well-mannered people.

"I think I want to say Japan. They’re very respectful in Japan," he said.

"They're probably the only country to make the British look relaxed."

William highlighted another country as well.

"Singapore is also very polite. It’s probably not a Western country that is the answer to this question, which, as a Westerner, is quite sad."

It is well known that Japanese language and culture are extremely focused on etiquette around social status, and it is not only Hanson who believes Japan is the most well-mannered nation.

According to numerous online sources and forums, Japan still stands out as the number one well-mannered country.

Other well-mannered nations

After doing some digging of our own and consulting other online resources, we found that Japan is widely viewed as the most well-mannered nation.

However, there were a few other countries that were also mentioned for their well-mannered people.

These include:

  • Japan
  • Singapore
  • France
  • Canada
  • Switzerland
  • India
  • China
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Sri Lanka
  • Denmark
  • Sweden
  • Germany
  • Thailand
  • United Kingdom

Defining what truly constitutes good manners is complex, as expectations differ across the world.

Although Japan is widely regarded as universally well-mannered, there are many nuances to manners and etiquette, and each nation has its own interpretation of what it means to be polite.
