Education has long been viewed as one of the most important things in the world, and while this remains true, in the modern world education comes in various forms and variations.

According to World Population Review, tertiary education, specifically studying towards a degree, has long been seen as the best way to guarantee a good future, but that is not necessarily true today.

“Today, what you earn from a degree depends heavily on where you study, what you study, and how the world values those skills,” says World Population Review.

Getting a degree should not be ruled out completely.

A person’s passions, dreams, abilities and strengths should still be considered, and sometimes these align perfectly with a specific degree.

If you are looking for a degree with the biggest payoff, the real question is not whether you should get a degree, but rather which paths actually pay off.

Another important factor highlighted by World Population Review is how degrees differ from country to country.

“Choosing where to study can be just as important as what you study.”

Earnings for the same degree can also differ depending on the country. The real question is where you see yourself ending up.

Degrees that pay off the most in today’s world

Here are some of the fields that consistently outperform others:

  • Technology (Computer Science, AI, Data Science)
  • Healthcare (Medicine, Nursing, specialised care)
  • Engineering (especially electrical, mechanical and energy)

“The market increasingly rewards skills tied to measurable output, such as coding, diagnosing, building and optimising.”

Degrees losing value

Some degrees are seeing a decline in financial returns. These include:

  • General business degrees, as they have become somewhat oversaturated in certain markets.
  • Creative arts degrees. These often work out better when paired with entrepreneurial or technical skills.
  • Law degrees. These show mixed outcomes across the world, but in many countries, there is an oversupply.

The rise of skills over degrees

“Increasingly, what you can do matters more than what you studied.”

Major tech firms such as Google and IBM increasingly prioritise skills-based evaluations over formal qualifications for many positions.

Short courses and certifications, such as those in data analytics, cybersecurity and project management, often provide a quicker return on investment compared to traditional degrees.

Online learning platforms such as Coursera, edX and coding bootcamps are equipping people with job-ready skills in a matter of months rather than years.

Countries where education pays off most

Three countries have been highlighted as having the best return on degrees. These are:

  • Switzerland
  • Canada
  • Australia
