Devi Sankaree Govender warns about new South African scam
Media icon and investigative journalist Devi Sankaree Govender opened up about a new scam targeting South Africans and shared more about 'The Devi Show'.
Devi Sankaree Govender is a South African media icon.
Her reputation as an award-winning investigative television journalist has been cemented by decades of bold, brave and fearless reporting that holds governments, companies and individuals to account.
Govender joined Breakfast with Martin Bester to talk about the success of 'The Devi Show', thank audiences for their support and give listeners an inside look into the life of one of South Africa's most renowned investigative journalists.
In 2020, Devi joined eMedia, which includes e.tv and eNCA, and launched 'The Devi Show' in the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
'The Devi Show' aired its 300th episode on Sunday, 12 July.
It is a huge milestone for a show that began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a talk show and quickly pivoted to catching crooks.
In six years, the show has managed to catch 209 crooks.
"Not bad, seeing as some episodes were dedicated to special events such as Women's Day and Youth Day, repeats and holiday episodes," Govender said.
"Since 2024, we have been working with a 91.2% success rate, so we have improved our own 'catch rate'."
On Breakfast with Martin Bester, Govender shared the story of one of her favourite crooks she has ever caught.
Like most of her stories, it started with a suspect who was running a scam. After searching for him for more than a year, the team finally discovered his whereabouts.
Eventually, Devi and her team, accompanied by the police, headed to a house in Northcliff where the suspect was believed to be hiding.
They initially could not find the suspect, but eventually discovered him in the most shocking hiding place.
"We found him hiding in his domestic worker's bed, in his pyjamas, under all the teddy bears," Govender said.
"He is still in jail, so lovely," she added.
When asked whether she had ever been wrong about a suspect, Govender confidently replied, "No."
Devi warns South Africans about scams
One thing people should remember, Devi warned, is that scammers are smart.
"These people are not stupid," she said.
In an upcoming episode of 'The Devi Show', the renowned investigative journalist explores a devastating new scam known as 'Scambodia'.
The scam sees South Africans being tricked into travelling to Cambodia, where they are then made to become scammers themselves.
