DJ Black Coffee is giving South African children their smiles back
Children in South Africa who cannot afford dental care are receiving help through Black Coffee’s new initiative.
DJ Black Coffee is one of South Africa’s biggest exports to the global entertainment industry.
Despite his global fame, he has not forgotten his roots. While he touches audiences through his music, he also changes lives through the Black Coffee Foundation.
The South African Grammy winner, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, has helped South African children improve their vision through the Gift of Sight by Black Coffee initiative.
The initiative is close to his heart, as he needed glasses while growing up.
The programme is now expanding the way it helps children by adding dental care.
According to The Citizen, the Gift of Sight programme has already assisted thousands of children, with its latest rollout taking place at Zenzeleni Primary School in Alexandra.
More than 500 children received eye tests, vision screenings and dental assessments at the school.
Once a child has been identified as needing further assistance, the foundation will help the family with follow-up arrangements and referrals to specialists.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will provide support with further eye testing.
Black Coffee Foundation CEO Lungie Maphumulo said the aim is to help children overcome preventable health barriers, ensuring that they can continue to learn and grow.
