'Breakfast with Martin Bester' recently came across a post by The Feed CPT, which showcased a few classic items that many South Africans remember from their childhood.

Every generation has its own nostalgic toys, items, games and TV shows, but these ones definitely stand out for today’s adults.

In the comments, one mom highlighted that these items are especially nostalgic for millennials, but are still loved by today’s children.

“I love the fact that my kids born in 2020 and after, being raised by a millennial mom, officially have spinning tops. They love the old-school Power Rangers, and we use Matey bath bubbles. I even taught them to play with the characters the same way I did. Kids raised by millennials are awesome,” she said.

So, do you remember these from your childhood?

1. Ingle angle silver bangle

This playground game was popular with many South African kids. With just an elastic band, a few friends and the rhyme, break time quickly became the best part of the school day.

2. Spinning top

Before screens became common, many South African children learned how to spin a top. Wrapping the string, throwing it properly and watching it spin on the ground was a familiar part of growing up.

3. Tazos

These collectable discs were traded, stacked and used in games during school breaks. Often found inside chip packets, each one had different characters or designs that kids loved to collect.

4. KFC Avalanche

This fast-food dessert combined soft-serve ice cream with chocolate or caramel sauce and crunchy toppings. It became a popular after-school treat for many South African kids.

5. Kellogg’s colour spoons

These colourful spoons were free items inside cereal boxes. Each one had a different character or design, making breakfast feel a little more exciting.

6. Matey bubble bath

This bubble bath bottle made bath time more entertaining for many South African children. Its character design and long-lasting bubbles turned an ordinary bath into something more playful.

7. Power Rangers

This TV show had many South African kids rushing home after school to watch it. The colourful heroes and fight scenes often inspired games on the playground.

8. Coca-Cola yo-yo

For many South African kids, the Coca-Cola yo-yo was a popular playground toy. Learning tricks like “walk the dog” turned break time into friendly competitions.
