How to keep kids entertained during the rainy festive season
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Rainy days don't have to ruin the festive mood.
While the Christmas season in South Africa usually calls for sunshine and outdoor fun, many parts of the country have been faced with extreme rainy conditions.
A bit of wet weather, however, shouldn’t put a damper on your festive cheer.
Rainy days can actually be the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy cosy moments at home with the kids.
Here are a few easy and fun ways to keep little ones entertained when the rain won't stop:
1. Arts and crafts
Rainy weather is ideal for getting creative. Set up a craft station with paper, glue, glitter and markers, and let kids make their own decorations or Christmas cards.
You can even try simple salt dough ornaments for a fun, hands-on project that doubles as keepsakes.
2. Holiday movie marathon
Turn the lounge into a festive cinema with blankets, cushions and popcorn.
Let the kids pick their favourite Christmas movies and settle in for a cosy movie marathon.
3. Baking Christmas treats
Get the kids involved in baking simple festive goodies like cookies or cupcakes.
From cutting shapes to decorating with icing and sprinkles, it’s a fun way to keep them busy, and they’ll love enjoying the treats afterwards.
4. Indoor treasure hunt
Bring the festive fun indoors with a Christmas-themed treasure hunt.
Hide small treats or toys around the house and give clues to help the kids find them. It’s a great way to keep them active and entertained, even inside.
5. Build a blanket fort
Transform your living room into a magical hideaway using blankets, cushions and chairs.
Add fairy lights for a festive touch and let the kids enjoy reading, playing or relaxing in their cosy creation.
6. Christmas board games and puzzles
Dust off the board games and puzzles for some family fun.
Festive-themed games, trivia or puzzles are a great way to keep kids entertained while encouraging bonding and teamwork.
7. Make homemade Christmas gifts
Encourage kids to create simple handmade gifts for family members, like cards, drawings or small crafts.
It's a meaningful activity that teaches the joy of giving and adds a personal touch to Christmas.
