It feels as though the minute winter ended, South Africa went straight into summer, completely skipping spring.

With summer in full swing, we're all looking for ways to cool down and what better way than with the trusty old fan?

Unfortunately, along with the comfort and relief a fan provides in hot weather, there's also an electricity bill attached to its use.

But just how much does it cost to run a fan, and does the comfort outweigh the cost?

Renewable energy specialist Wes Reddy, known for his informative videos on electricity usage and pricing, shared some much-needed advice on fan efficiency.

According to Reddy, a normal household fan uses somewhere between 50 and 150 watts of electricity per hour.

To calculate how much it costs to run a fan, the electricity expert used an average of 100 watts per hour, which equates to 0.1 kWh at R4.00, costing about R0.40 per hour.

That means if you use a 100-watt fan for one hour a day for a month (30 days), you'd pay roughly R12.00 to run your fan.

On the other hand, if you prefer to run the fan continuously throughout the night for eight hours, you can expect to pay R96.00 per month.

Breakdown:

  • R0.40 × 8 hours = R3.20
  • R3.20 × 30 days = R96.00

He also highlighted that fans use around 50–150 watts per hour, compared to air conditioners, which use between 1,000 and 30,000 watts per hour, making the fan a clear winner when it comes to cost efficiency.
