How to use the 2026 public holidays to get 51 days off
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
2026 is here, and it’s time to start planning your holidays.
If 2025 proved anything, it's that it is important to prioritise rest and health, and luckily South Africa has many public holidays to help you optimise your leave days for even more rest.
Planning your rest
Planning for rest might seem counterintuitive, but many life coaches, psychologists and online reports agree that planning your rest and off days can be very effective.
We often say that we will take a break soon, but then our busy schedule comes along, and we never really rest.

Making time and planning to rest helps ensure that you actually get the rest you need.
Other benefits of planning your off days well in advance include:
- Reducing the stress of last-minute holiday planning.
- If you make bookings in advance it forces you to actually take those days and rest.
- It gives you something to look forward to when life gets tough.
- It improves productivity as rest is essential to spark creativity and recharge your brain and body so you have the capacity to continue.
- Saving money. If you book in advance the cost of flights and accommodation is usually a bit cheaper.
