South Africa, get ready for a new shopping experience…
We're all familiar with America's retail giant, Walmart.
Well, now South Africans can buckle up for a new shopping experience as the world’s biggest retailer will soon open its first stores in the country.
The retail giant announced that the first of its branded stores will open in the final quarter of 2025.

According to BusinessTech, Walmart already operates more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries. In its 2025 fiscal year, the retailer also reported total revenue of R11.9 trillion.
Good news for Africa
Walmart plans to launch its first stores in South Africa following a growth summit held in April 2025.
At the summit, the retail giant identified suppliers from 12 different African countries, including small and medium-sized Africa-based suppliers.
Keeping it proudly African and South African, the stores will stock many locally sourced products.
The South African stores will offer everything from merchandise and fresh groceries to household essentials, apparel, and technology.

Walmart International's president and CEO, Kath McLay, said these stores will be designed with "customers in mind," which means brightly lit stores, wide aisles, and global brands.
BusinessTech reports that the group will likely announce official launch dates in October.
No stranger to South Africa
Walmart already owns Massmart, the company that operates South African brands such as Game, Makro, and Builder's.
According to BusinessTech, the American retail group first acquired 51% of Massmart in 2010 and, in 2022, took full ownership of the group.
"We're thrilled to begin this journey, introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers, and communities," said Massmart CEO, Miles van Rensburg.
"By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans."
