It is a sad day for South Africa as the discovery of an eighth woman's body in the Ekurhuleni area has spread fear among community members and the nation as a whole.

One of the victims has been identified as 38-year-old runner Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo.

On Tuesday, 15 September, hundreds of community members and political party supporters gathered in the Rhodesfield area to take a stand against the senseless murders.

Hundreds of women marched to the Kempton Park Police Station and held a candlelit ceremony in memory of Tsontso, whose body was found in the area.

Police investigate possible links between Ekurhuleni murders

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told Breakfast with Martin Bester that a multidisciplinary team, including tracking teams, criminologists and psychologists, has been deployed to investigate whether the murders of several women across Ekurhuleni are linked.

Police have not confirmed whether a serial killer is operating in the area, but Mathe said investigators are examining similarities between the cases and have expanded their efforts beyond Kempton Park as more bodies have been discovered in surrounding areas.

Mathe said the investigation into the deaths would not be confined to Kempton Park, considering the possibility that the perpetrator or perpetrators could be moving between areas.
