The most common Valentine's gifts people buy

Is Valentine’s Day truly about celebrating love or is it a money-making scheme?

Valentine's Day is once again upon us. 

Around the world, people are celebrating love with gifts, acts of romance and lavish dinners. 

On the other side, there are those who roll their eyes at what they see as an overly commercial occasion.

But whether you love it or hate it, people will celebrate, and with that comes spending a lot of money.

So what exactly are they buying?

Recent data from a survey by the National Retail Federation reveals the most common Valentine’s gifts people are planning to buy.

Here is the full list:

  • 56% plan to buy candy
  • 41% will purchase greeting cards
  • 41% will buy flowers
  • 39% are spending on an evening out
  • 25% plan to buy jewellery

Candy, especially chocolates and sweets, remains the undisputed champion.

And if local conversations are anything to go by, South Africans are not that different.
