Netflix is currently facing a lawsuit over the hit film ‘KPop Demon Hunters’.

Christian metal band Demon Hunter is suing the streaming giant over alleged trademark infringement.

According to the BBC, Demon Hunter has been making music and touring for 25 years.

The band argues that Netflix’s plans for a global tour, the movie’s name and related merchandise are causing confusion and infringing on the band’s own brand.

Netflix’s offerings have caused an “almost complete overlap” with the band’s own offerings.

The band’s company, Hyde Lane, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, 18 August, claiming that Netflix Studios and live promoter AEG Presents have caused “substantial confusion”.

“The brand that Hyde Lane has carefully built over the course of the past quarter century now faces an existential crisis, thereby necessitating the filing of this action and the granting of the requested relief from this Court,” the original complaint said.

The BBC reports that the band has requested that Netflix stop using the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ name for recorded music, live shows and merchandise.

They are also asking for unspecified damages.

One example of how the similar names have allegedly caused confusion involves someone who spent $500 (about R8,000) on tickets for a Demon Hunter concert in New York, thinking it was a child-friendly show.
