Pretoria residents warned over upcoming 11-hour water outage
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
The City of Tshwane has announced a planned water outage.
If you live or work in Pretoria East or the central parts of the city, you may want to keep your buckets and water bottles close by.
The City of Tshwane has confirmed planned infrastructure work that will take place on Lynnwood Road in Brooklyn.
The city’s Water and Sanitation Business Unit is set to relocate a water pipeline on Thursday, 7 May. This move is aimed at making future repairs and service delivery much smoother.
The project is expected to take about 11 hours, with taps scheduled to run dry from 08:00 to 19:00.
According to municipal officials, this relocation forms part of a broader plan to keep the city’s water network in good condition. Currently, the pipe is positioned in a location that makes it difficult for technicians to access. Moving it to a more open area will resolve this.
“The pipe will be relocated to an accessible location so that it is convenient for maintenance purposes,” the city stated.
While work starts early on Thursday morning, the impact will be felt across a wide range of residential and business areas.
This maintenance comes at a time when Gauteng municipalities are under pressure to manage ageing systems while trying to keep water supply stable.
Areas that will be affected:
Residents and businesses in the following areas should prepare for outages:
- Arcadia (including Extensions 8, 10 and 11)
- Brooklyn
- Colbyn (including Extensions 1 and 2)
- Hatfield
- Hillcrest (including Extension 1)
- Menlo Park
- Muckleneuk
- Sunnyside
- Elandspoort 357-JR
- Hartebeestpoort 362-JR
- Koedoespoort 325-JR
The city has asked residents in these communities to store enough water for drinking, cooking and basic hygiene before the shutdown begins.
Depending on your location on the grid, you may experience a drop in water pressure or a complete loss of supply during the day.
“The city apologises profusely for the inconvenience that may arise as a result of this scheduled work,” the municipality added.
At this stage, there is no confirmation on whether water tankers will be deployed to affected streets, so it is best to be prepared.
