"These measures are necessary as South Africa proudly hosts the G20 Summit, a major international event bringing together global leaders," said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

Major road closures and traffic disruptions will affect South Africa's capital city, with road closures on the N1, R21 and several other key routes.

Extensive list of roads affected in Tshwane

  • N1 Highway – Pretoria East & Centurion section
  • All major interchanges between Midrand and Pretoria East/Centurion will experience rolling closures:
  • Atterbury Road interchange
  • Garsfontein Road interchange
  • Delmas Road interchange
  • Botha Avenue interchange
  • John Vorster Drive interchange
  • Brakfontein interchange
  • Samrand interchange (affects Pretoria-bound traffic)
  • N1 through Pretoria

According to Rekord, full temporary shutdowns will cause delays between Brakfontein, Garsfontein and Atterbury when convoys pass, as well as on the R21 Freeway from Pretoria to OR Tambo.

The R21 will be one of the most heavily affected routes:

  • R21 entire corridor from Pretoria to Kempton Park
  • R21 South – Atlas off-ramp
  • R21 South – Voortrekker off-ramp

"When the convoys are moving, roads will be closed off completely, and movement from road users—including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists—will be limited. Roads will be reopened as soon as the convoys pass the affected routes, with delays of approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour in some areas."

These arterial points may be restricted during convoy movement:

  • Delmas Road (R50) connecting to N1/R21
  • Botha Avenue, Centurion
  • John Vorster Drive, Centurion
  • Garsfontein Road towards N1
  • Atterbury Road towards N1

Major affected routes across Gauteng, including Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg

Full closure on Grayston Drive is scheduled for Saturday, 22 November, from 4am to 10am.

Golden Highway will also undergo a full closure between Rand Show Road and Soweto Highway from Monday, 17 November.

Traffic access on Nasrec Road will be restricted on 22 and 23 November, with the section between Rand Show Road and Shaft 17 Road fully closed. Limited access will remain from the N17 traffic circle to Shaft 17 Road.

The northern stretch of Rand Show Road will be closed on 22 and 23 November between the N1 and Nasrec Road. The southern section of Nasrec Road will be converted into a dual carriageway to support contra-flow traffic for residents of Ormonde View.

Booysens Reserve Road will be closed on 22 and 23 November between Crownwood Road, with only limited access permitted. Intersections leading into Booysens Reserve, including Crownwood and Amethyst, as well as Crownwood and Modulus, will also be closed to through-traffic but will allow restricted access.

  • For east–west travel, use smaller regional roads through Germiston, Kempton Park or Bedfordview instead of the R24/N12.
  • In the Roodepoort area, use Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan De Wet Road and Ontdekkers Road instead of Hendrik Potgieter Road.
  • Within Fourways, use Main Road, Cedar Road and Witkoppen Road.
  • Within Sandton/Rosebank/Parktown, use side streets parallel to Jan Smuts, Oxford or Rivonia Road, such as Corlett Drive, Sandton Drive, and 11th Avenue.
  • In southern Johannesburg, Riverlea, Nasrec and Ormonde View, use Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Crownwood Road (Fordsburg–Crown Mines), Soweto Highway, N17, Aerodrome Road and Adcock Ingram Road.

"Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and consider alternative routes where possible. These measures are essential to enhance public safety, enforce traffic compliance, and support ongoing traffic law enforcement initiatives, including vehicle inspections and congestion management," added the RTMC.
