Growing up Persian in Mahikeng
Vafa Naraghi was raised by Persian parents in Mahikeng, amidst the cultural convergence of South Africa at the end of apartheid.
This unique upbringing laid the foundation for his comedic career, rooted in the blend of Persian traditions and South African spirit.
As he shared personal anecdotes, Vafa humorously detailed his experience of becoming a “cultural chameleon”, adapting to various environments and different societal expectations.
From engineering to comedy
Before stepping onto the comedy stage, Vafa charted a different path as a structural engineer.
He humorously recounted his academic journey, earning a Master's degree from the University of Cape Town, and how he realised comedy was his true calling.
His transition from engineering to full-time comedy wasn’t just a career shift but a leap into pursuing his passion. This decision seems to have paid off, given his current stature in the comedy scene.

Vafa didn't shy away from keeping things light-heartedly personal, poking fun at Martin Bester.

Becoming South African
Vafa Naraghi’s one-man show, Becoming South African, is his ode to the country’s rich tapestry of cultures.
His goal with the tour is nothing short of ambitious, performing in every province across South Africa.

Central to Vafa's comedy is his ability to connect people through humour. On the show, he emphasised how understanding both the commonalities and differences among people can forge stronger connections.
"It's the differences and commonalities that make us curious about one another," he explained, further adding that these elements lead to rich, engaging dialogues, a philosophy that shines in his performances.
