There's a new favourite car among hijackers in Gauteng
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Take a look at the most hijacked cars in Gauteng right now...
Car hijackings have decreased by 15.1% in the last three months compared to the same period in 2024.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), this relates to 4,533 hijackings reported in the most recent three-month period, which is still around 50 vehicles daily.

Among the 50 hijacked vehicles daily, there is a new favourite, especially in Gauteng.
According to new online reports, one of the best-selling family vehicles, the Toyota Corolla Cross, has become an especially big target for hijacking syndicates.
The reason for this new interest in the family vehicle is its increased popularity among consumers.
According to Rekord, the Toyota Corolla Cross was ranked as the fourth best-selling vehicle in the country in 2024 and has already climbed to second place in 2025.

This makes the vehicle more appealing for black market parts, but also easier for criminals using the cars to blend in on the road.
Other hijacked cars in Gauteng
The other most hijacked vehicles in South Africa include:
- VW Polo
- Toyota Hilux
- Ford Ranger
- Toyota Corolla Cross
- Toyota Fortuner
These models are popular among criminals due to their resale value, demand for parts, and, increasingly, their use in cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates.
