A Russian circus audience got a little more than they bargained for after a tiger made its way into the crowd during a performance.

The chaos reportedly erupted on Sunday, 19 April, in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.

Russian law enforcement has now launched a criminal investigation into the incident.

Eyewitness video footage that has been shared on social media shows three tigers and two trainers inside the ring of the circus when the barrier separating the animals from the public suddenly collapsed.

One of the tigers took this as the opportunity to jump over the lowered net into the seating area where the audience was.

Social media videos captured the moment the big cat moved through the rows of seats as spectators ran to get out of its path.

In the videos, people can also be heard screaming and gasping.

Eventually, a trainer can be seen trying to steer the tiger towards an exit.

“Dear visitors, please remain calm or you’ll make it worse,” an announcer was heard saying over the circus loudspeaker.

According to an online report, trainers eventually managed to guide the tiger into a secure transportation container.

Authorities have confirmed that no one was injured during the incident, and the tiger was immediately removed by specialists and returned to its enclosure.

The Investigative Committee, Russia’s top investigative body, confirmed on Monday that they have opened a criminal case following the event.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Rostov Region is now probing the circus for serious safety violations.
