Tips to fly smarter during the festive season

With the year-end rush in full swing and airports busier than ever, a little preparation can go a long way.

Every festive season, travellers miss flights due to last-minute delays, long queues or small oversights.

Airport timelines are carefully structured to ensure safety and on-time departures, especially during peak travel periods.

Check-in typically opens two hours before domestic flights to allow enough time for baggage screening, passenger security checks and aircraft preparation.

"With fuller flights and busier airports, processes that usually move quickly can take longer during peak seasons," says LIFT brand manager Haydn Halim-Henning.

"There are extensive safety and security procedures in place, so arriving early is one of the easiest ways travellers can reduce stress."

Online check-in, early arrival and travelling light all contribute to smoother airport operations.

Here are tips to fly smarter during the festive season:

Before you travel

Leave early

Traffic, parking delays and longer queues are the most common reasons travellers miss flights. Planning ahead and building in buffer time can make all the difference.

“Leaving early allows for unexpected delays and helps passengers arrive calm and prepared,” says Halim-Henning.

As a rule of thumb, arriving at the airport at least two hours before departure gives enough time for check-in, security and boarding.

Clearly label your items

With higher passenger volumes, misplaced items become more common.

Adding visible luggage tags with contact details and even placing details inside your bag improve the chances of a quick return.

“Trackers can also be a helpful backup for valuable items like laptops,” Halim-Henning notes.

Know your baggage allowance

Packing within the airline’s size and weight limits, particularly for cabin baggage, helps avoid delays at check-in and boarding. It’s also important to be aware of prohibited items.

“Planning your packing ahead of time ensures a smoother check-in experience,” says Halim-Henning. Don’t forget essential documents, especially if you’re hiring a car at your destination.

Pre-select your seat

Choosing seats in advance can save time and help groups sit together without last-minute changes at the gate.

“Pre-selected seating reduces boarding delays, particularly for families or groups travelling together,” Halim-Henning explains.

Pack a snack

Busy airports often mean longer waits. Bringing a small snack, especially when travelling with children, can help keep everyone comfortable until boarding.

Double-check your ticket

Confirm your flight date, departure time and boarding gate, and allow enough time to walk to the gate, especially in larger terminals.

Check in smartly

If you’ve checked in online and aren’t checking baggage, head straight to security. Otherwise, arriving early helps avoid queue anxiety as boarding time approaches.

Have documents ready

Keeping your boarding pass accessible and preparing electronics and metal items before security screening helps keep lines moving.

Listen for announcements

Boarding typically starts 30 minutes before departure, and gates close 15 minutes before take-off. Stay alert for announcements or gate changes.

Once on board

Once settled, keep personal items close, especially identification.

“The most commonly left-behind item on flights is passenger ID,” says Halim-Henning. “That can cause unnecessary complications once you arrive.”

Plan ahead, leave early and keep track of your belongings. Three simple habits that can make festive-season travel far smoother.
