For the past few weeks, parts of South Africa have been hit by extreme weather conditions, including severe rain and thunderstorms.

Although South Africa isn't typically known for its natural disasters, there have been a few moments that left residents worried.

Earlier this month, a massive tornado formed in the large Free State town of Harrismith.

Video footage of the enormous tornado was quickly shared on social media, and many people couldn’t believe their eyes.

And if you thought that was the end of South Africa's tornado sightings, you would be mistaken.

On Monday, 24 November, another tornado hit the Free State, this time near the town of Heilbron.

Watch here:

"A tornado was observed earlier today near Heilbron, moving across open farmland," said Storm Report SA.

The Facebook post from Storm Report SA also came with a quick warning to “stay weather-aware” in South Africa, and we couldn’t agree more.

South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela confirmed to News24 that the weather phenomenon was indeed a tornado, but that minimal harm was done.

"We haven’t had any reports of damage. From the footage, it's clearly a tornado, and it was within a region where we issued a warning for severe thunderstorms. It appears that a combination of storms in the area may have resulted in some wind shear, particularly low-level wind shear, along with sufficient moisture. So different systems met within the area," he said.
