WATCH: Crocodile spotted near homes in Limpopo
Residents have raised concerns about the safety of livestock and the community.
Video footage of a crocodile sighting near Marble Hall in Limpopo has sparked safety concerns among community members.
In the footage, the crocodile can be seen moving between the local sewage treatment plant and the Leeuwfontein Crossing.
Locals believe the crocodiles, which have been spotted at the sewage plant before, are being forced out of their usual hiding spots due to ongoing construction at the facility.
The plant is situated near the Olifants River, which is known for its crocodiles.
The Sekhukhune District Municipality is currently in the middle of a refurbishment at the Leeuwfontein Waste Water Treatment Works.
The project, which kicked off in March, is expected to be finished by November.
For residents, this latest sighting is part of a worrying trend.
According to Middelburg Observer, community member Moshe Mashiloane, who identified the animal in the video as an adult Nile crocodile, says the situation is becoming urgent.
“The authorities need to intervene before the situation becomes worse. Before the upgrades started, I once saw a goat carcass in one of the ponds at the sewage plant. Residents have also complained about missing chickens. We suspect the crocodiles could be responsible,” he said.
With livestock already reportedly going missing, the community is now calling for swift action from officials.
