There is no denying that South Africa is a one-of-a-kind country.

Not only is it a diverse nation with 12 official languages and some of the best fauna and flora in the world, it also has many quirky characteristics.

From our unique names for things, like calling traffic lights robots, to using words like “shame” in almost any context.

As South African content creator Cool Story Bru pointed out, South Africa is also home to plenty of weird place names.

In a video he shared, he highlighted some of the places in our beautiful country with the strangest names.

Watch here:

The names of places in South Africa

Los-My-Cherry in Mpumalanga, which translates to “leave my girlfriend”.

Pofadder in the Northern Cape, which refers to the puff adder snake.

Klein Mier in the Northern Cape, which means “little ant”.

Another Northern Cape town called Hotazel, named because of how hot it gets.

Die Hel, or The Hell, is a remote village in the Garden Route, reportedly named because of the steep roads leading to it.

Crook’s Corner in the north-eastern corner of the Kruger National Park.

Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein, a farm in the North West, which can be translated as “the spring where two buffaloes were shot stone dead with one shot”.

South Africa responds

Many South Africans also headed to the comments section to share even more weird place names.
