Moments after winning his first Olympic medal, Winter Olympian Sturla Holm Laegreid stunned the world after confessing to cheating on his girlfriend.

The Norwegian biathlete took home the bronze in the men’s individual 20km race.

During a post-race interview with Norwegian state broadcaster NRK, the 28-year-old revealed to the world that he had 'lost the love of his life' after cheating on her.

"There is someone I want to share this with who may not be watching today," he said.

"Six months ago, I met the love of my life. The most beautiful, wonderful person in the world."

"And three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her," he confessed.

"And that's all I've been thinking about for a week," he continued.

"And it's been the worst week of my life. So I had a gold medal in my life."

Laegreid added that he understands there are many people who would now look at him differently.

The biathlete's fellow countryman Johan-Olav Botn took gold in the race, with Frenchman Eric Perrot winning silver.
