Woman furious after being asked to leave local pub over revealing clothing
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
A local woman was left disappointed after allegedly being told to leave a pub due to her “inappropriate skort”.
Durban resident Amber Auret has sparked quite a debate on social media after calling out a local pub for asking her to leave because of her attire.
In her Facebook post, the 29-year-old alleged that she was asked to leave the local Durban pub because her skort, an item of clothing that is a blend between a short and a skirt, was “too short”.
“I was there for about two hours with no problems. After I started dancing, I was suddenly told to leave because my shorts were ‘too short,’” the young woman said.
According to Auret, she was also told that she was making some of the male patrons’ wives uncomfortable.
“I’ve been to this place multiple times before, wearing similar outfits, and never had an issue, which is why this experience felt so unfair,” she added.
“Nothing was said when I arrived, and there’s never been an issue with my outfits before.
If there is a dress code, it should be clearly communicated upfront and applied consistently, not enforced selectively after the fact.”
“Being asked to leave based on how others might feel is not appropriate, and it made for a very uncomfortable experience.”
Hundreds of people commented on her initial post, where she also shared photos of her outfit, with many sharing their opinions on the ordeal, whether for or against her point.
This led to a broader conversation on 'Breakfast with Martin Bester' about appropriate versus inappropriate attire in certain settings, with listeners giving their opinions on the specific situation.
Official statement from the pub
Musketeers Pub & Grill in Queensburgh, Durban posted an official statement regarding the ordeal.
Official Statement from Musketeers Pub & Grill Regarding Saturday Evening Incident.
Musketeers Pub & Grill would like to address an incident that occurred on Saturday evening, which has since escalated on social media and in public discussion.
The establishment wishes to place the matter in it's proper context and clarify the facts.
On the evening in question, several patrons approached a member of our security team expressing discomfort regarding another patron’s attire, which they felt was overly revealing in the setting. Musketeers Pub & Grill prides itself on maintaining an environment that is welcoming and comfortable for a broad and diverse clientele.
Following these concerns, a member of our team approached the patron discreetly and respectfully to request that she consider covering up. At no stage was she asked to leave the premises, nor was the right of admission enforced against her.
The patron indicated that she and her party would be leaving; however, the interaction unfortunately escalated into a verbal exchange. A staff member recorded part of the interaction once it became clear that tensions were rising.
During the exchange, the patron indicated her intention to take the matter public.
Musketeers Pub & Grill wishes to emphasise the following:
The approach to the patron was conducted in a polite and non-confrontational manner.
No attempt has been made, nor will be made, to publicly share any footage or images, as we respect the dignity and privacy of all patrons.
Our intention at all times was to balance the comfort of all guests while maintaining a respectful and safe environment.
While Musketeers Pub & Grill offers music and a vibrant social atmosphere, it is not a nightclub and maintains standards consistent with a family-friendly and community-oriented venue.
We remain committed to providing a safe, respectful, and enjoyable space for all patrons and regret that this situation escalated as it did.
Musketeers Pub & Grill appreciates the continued support of its patrons and encourages respectful dialogue around the matter.
