Woolworths opens cashless tuckshops at private schools
Updated | By Jacaranda FM / Megan Baadjies
For years, South Africans joked that Woolworths' food goes to private school. Now, it officially does.
Woolworths has launched branded tuckshops at two private schools in the Western Cape - Springfield Convent in Wynberg and Curro Century City - which sell only Woolies food.
Gone are the days of slap chips and fizzy drinks. In their place? Bottled water and meals made with 100% non-genetically modified (GMO) ingredients.
School tuckshops just got fancy, with a touch of the Woolworths difference.
Springfield Convent was the first to partner with Woolworths, with the retailer converting a container into a fully-fledged tuckshop back in 2023.
More recently, Curro Century City announced its partnership, which launched on Monday, 26 January.
Both tuckshops are completely cashless and operate via the Karri app, allowing learners to pay for snacks or pre-order their lunches. Parents can load up to R25,000 onto their child’s account and track their spending.
According to BusinessTech, learners can view the tuckshop menu directly on the Karri app, making it easy to choose meals in advance.
While it’s not clear what meals are on their menu, the retailer told BusinessTech: “Woolworths is committed to supporting learners with thoughtful everyday choices, reinforcing a positive relationship with food from a young age and setting a higher standard for school tuck shop offerings.”
While there are no confirmed plans to expand to other schools yet, Woolworths said it will be “testing and learning from the existing tuckshops”
Curro says the partnership aims to provide learners with “healthy, high-quality food in portions and at prices appropriate to their age group.”

As expected, South Africans had plenty to say about the humble tuckshop entering the Woolworths era:
“Yoh, no snappers and apple munch there,” one user said.
Another commented: “These kids will never know piemans pies & chip rolls that stained your fingers for days.”
“I’m dying to see the menus and the price list. Imagine a grade 1 child carrying a bank card,” said another user.
“Love it, I support Woollies 100% . For Those who cannot afford or who does [sic] not support bring your packed lunch….. we have choices,” another commented.
