Hilarious Zimbabwean tries to learn Afrikaans in five months using children's books
Jigo Jordan, as he is known on social media, has had users hooked on his goal to learn Afrikaans in five months.
Gregory Muwombi, a 27-year-old Zimbabwean man who is better known as Jigo Jordan, has had audiences glued to his social media pages.
Muwombi, who currently lives in Cape Town, has decided that he wants to learn how to speak Afrikaans before the end of the year, and he has shared his journey on social media.
The 27-year-old Uber driver first moved from Harare to KwaZulu-Natal and later moved to Cape Town, where he first realised how widely spoken Afrikaans is.
It was only recently, however, that he decided he wanted to learn to speak Afrikaans.
According to Muwombi, his mother tongue is Shona, but he can also speak Zulu and, due to the similarities between the languages, can also understand Xhosa and Ndebele.

He talks about why he loves learning Afrikaans so much, the funny phrases his best friend taught him first, and the sweet surprise waiting for him at the end of the interview.
The social media content creator’s best friend is Afrikaans-speaking, which is how he first started picking up the language and what drew him closer to it.
For him, it’s not just about the language, but also about understanding the people behind the language.
He then decided to commit to learning Afrikaans and headed to the Kraaifontein library, where he started borrowing children’s books and Afrikaans dictionaries with simple vocabulary to help him learn the language.
Since deciding to embark on this new adventure, he has started posting daily videos of his progress on social media.
In these videos, Muwombi showcases the books he’s reading and also shows how he’s learning Afrikaans by reading them aloud and scrutinising the words, making for some hilariously entertaining content.
Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to Muwombi about his goal and also taught him some of their favourite words.
