8 Celebrated film directors without a single Oscar nomination

Awards shows are known for making controversial decisions, but these directors have had an undeniable influence on cinema and yet have never received the ultimate recognition.
Artists will tell you creating art isn't about winning awards, getting special treatment or collecting accolades.

However, it is shocking when fans and critics see their favourite performers, directors or artists not get the recognition they deserve
There is also something quite satisfying and gratifying about receiving an award from your peers and "colleagues".

Whether you're a fan or not, some of the most highly acclaimed and praised Hollywood directors have never even received one Oscar nomination.
Remember how Leonardo DiCaprio played every Academy Award-nominated role for years and yet walked away empty-handed to the shock and horror of everyone in the industry, until he finally won his one and only award for Best Actor in 2016.

Just like DiCaprio, these directors are not bad directors or B-movie directors.
Most of them have won between 40 and 100 awards and received even more nominations at other events.
Their careers spanned decades; their movies have been studied in depth, copied, remixed, and admired.

Here are the eight directors who have never received an Academy Award nomination (even though their influence is all over retro and modern Hollywood):
1. Brian De Palma
Brian De Palma is an expert in multiple genres, from gory horrors to gangster greats.
One look through his filmography, and you can agree that this talented director is deserving of at least a nomination.

Many of his cast have even won an Oscar, though De Palma, at 85 years old, has not even received an honorary Oscar, is credited as one of the "architects of the New Hollywood era" and is still working as a director on more films.

2. Sergio Leone
The late, great Sergio Leone was a pioneer of the Western genre, and his films have become iconic in every sense of the word.

The influence he had on Hollywood and the movie industry is clear in many films that followed his work.
Sadly, he never received any Oscar nominations for his films, although he did eventually receive an Honorary Oscar in 2003. That seemed a little too late.

3. John Carpenter
Unfortunately, horror movies have only become real Oscar contenders in recent years, but there has always been the inside joke of having to work on a drama film if you want to be nominated.
Carpenter's movies have also become such a massive part of film and pop culture, and his impact on the horror genre has been substantial.

Something many people don't know is that he also wrote and composed much of the music for his films, thereby extending his influence even further.
Again, another director who, despite his massive influence on the sci-fi and horror genres, never received an Oscar nomination.

4. Claire Denis
One of the most influential directors still working today, the French filmmaker's movies are known for their timeless stories, but might be too experimental or "indie" for the Academy.
Her 1999 film 'Beau Travail' is widely considered to be one of the best movies of the decade, and her style of creating is distinct, powerful and always captivating.

5. David Cronenberg
Few directors have ever understood the intersection of technology and the human body, but Cronenberg has defined the subgenre.
Through body horror movies, his films make people uncomfortable, which is pretty much the entire point.

In over five decades of directing, he has consistently made exceptionally good yet unsettling movies, but unfortunately, he has not received any Academy Award nominations, as those films also fall outside the Academy’s traditional comfort zone.

6. Park Chan-wookA theme amongst these directors is the unsettling nature of their work, including Park Chan-wook's.
His elegant-seeming films are uncomfortable underneath the surface, which is a difficult balance to achieve, and he does it beautifully.

From his incredible films to his television directing work, he has remained very consistent in his art.
Despite international acclaim, Park has yet to receive an Oscar nomination as a director and his latest film, 'No Other Choice', was noted as one of the 2026 Oscar nominations' most egregious snubs.

7. Wong Kar-wai
While the plots of Wong Kar-wai's movies might seem simple, the emotions they evoke are not, and his focus is to make them linger.
He is known for letting the chemistry between his actors guide the movie, leading to a lot of improvisation.

The use of music, slow motion, and colour in his most acclaimed movie, 'In the Mood for Love', sets him apart from the rest.
It also makes it harder to believe that he has never received an Academy Award nomination.

8. Béla Tarr
Béla Tarr made movies for those who had the time and patience for them. And the experiences are so rewarding.
The late director's storytelling is a true antithesis of the modern blockbuster, slow and almost stubbornly so.

One of his most legendary films is known for being seven hours long, but it's not a gimmick; some say the emotions viewers feel wouldn't have been possible in a shorter film.
Never Oscar-nominated but considered Oscar-worthy.
