Aircraft fuel spill at local airport after ground equipment collision

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed a fuel leak following an incident involving an aircraft.

Emergency crews responded swiftly at Cape Town International Airport on Monday morning after a fuel leak occurred on the apron.

The incident, which took place at around 11:06, involved a FlySafair aircraft and a piece of ground handling equipment.

According to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), ground handling equipment made contact with the aircraft while it was stationary.

“The ground handling equipment (staircase) collided with a stationary aircraft, causing a fuel spill on the apron.”

Fire and rescue crews responded swiftly, using flame-retardant foam to secure the area around the aircraft.

“The emergency response teams attended immediately, and the situation is being managed and closely monitored. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation,” Dijoe explained

Despite the incident, it has been confirmed that airport operations were not affected.

No flights were delayed, and no injuries were reported. However, the person operating the staircase did undergo a medical check-up.

“There have been no injuries reported; however, the staircase operator is being assessed, and flight operations continue. The safety of passengers, staff, and all airport users remains our top priority.”
