Automobile Association CEO gives honest answers to fuel price questions

Due to the current war in the Middle East, Iran has virtually closed the vital Strait of Hormuz, used for transporting a fifth of global crude and gas flows, since the United States and Israel began striking the country on February 28.

One of the top stories worldwide is the current conflict in the Middle East.

As the world watches, the ripple effects of this war are felt globally.

Amongst death and destruction, even those in countries thousands of kilometres away from what is happening on the ground are also experiencing the impact on their cost of living.

Something that has been making headlines, causing stress, worry, and confusion, is the possibility that fuel prices could reach record highs.

On 26 March, Jacaranda Newswatch reported that the Central Energy Fund estimates that South Africans will see petrol prices rise by more than R5 a litre and diesel by nearly R9 a litre from 1 April.

Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana also said the cabinet has set up a committee to investigate whether the fuel levy should be cut to ease the looming fuel price spike. 

South Africans are close to panic mode, and as April approaches, speculation is at an all-time high while everyone waits for any kind of clarification.

The Drive with Rob and Roz spoke to the CEO of the Automobile Association of South Africa, Bobby Ramagwede, about the potential fuel price increases and what the realistic expectation should be.

Since pioneering roadside assistance in South Africa in 1930, they have expanded their range of services to include technical investigations, motor-related legal advice, roadworthy tests, and travel services and advice. 

They are proud of their role as the champion of the South African motorist and tackle motoring issues of national and macro-economic importance on motorists'​ behalf, including eTolls and improving the safety of children in cars.

At the start of the year, in February 2026, the Automobile Association issued an important warning, stating it had cause for concern about one specific car brand that is still considered fairly new to SA.
