Deciding what colour to paint the exterior of your house is a major decision.

Not only is it an immense amount of work, but it can also cost a pretty penny.

It's also the first thing someone will notice about your home, and once it's done, it's difficult to turn back.

According to House Beautiful, the colour of your house's exterior could also impact the resale value of your home.

You might want to rethink painting your house in a trendy or unique shade.

"Colour has a powerful psychological impact," says London- and Miami-based designer Natalia Miyar of Natalia Miyar Atelier.

"Tones that feel too harsh or eccentric can affect a buyer's perception," she added.

After consulting with experts in the fields of architecture, design, and renovations, House Beautiful revealed the best and worst colours you can paint your house when it comes to resale value.

The best colours to paint your house if you're selling

1. Warm Whites

You can never go wrong with warm whites, as it's a timeless classic and overall crowd pleaser.

2. Soft Taupes and Greiges

Taupes and greiges are both neutral, muted colours that sit somewhere between brown, grey, and beige.

3. Sand, Stone, and Sun-Baked Shades

As the names suggest, these colours include shades of light browns, sandstone and pale terracotta.

4. Historic Earth Tones

"Historic Earth Tones" usually refers to a palette of muted, natural colours inspired by traditional architecture, landscapes, and materials. These colours were often used in historic buildings and are chosen to blend harmoniously with nature.

5. Deep, Warm Black

According to the findings, black is having its moment—but not the cold, industrial type. Blacks inspired by charred wood or dramatic alpine architecture are the way to go.

Colours to avoid

Basically, any bold or eccentric colours are not the way to go.

"Bright and strongly coloured houses can be amazing," says Seth Ballard of Ballard & Mensua Architecture.

"But when thinking about resale, it's best to broaden the market."

It is also recommended to avoid colours that are too yellow or too grey.

"Yellows can pick up odd undertones depending on the surrounding landscaping, and greys often feel cold and unwelcoming," says Christopher Boutlier of Christopher Boutlier Interiors.
