'Chomi' the chatbot is set to help survivors of GBV in South Africa

The WhatsApp chatbot was designed by experts to give helpful and meaningful responses to users.

Shout-It-Now, a community-based health provider, took it upon themselves to highlight the usefulness of technology to help GBV survivors.

The group released ‘Chomi’, a WhatsApp chatbot, in August that offers advice and information sourced from experts free of charge.

With over 640 built-in messages, the chatbot can offer conversational help to users via nine streams:

  1. Emergency assistance
  2. GBV information and FAQs
  3. Reporting violence
  4. What to do if I have been raped
  5. Counselling support
  6. Legal assistance
  7. Safety planning
  8. Women’s shelters
  9. Connect to support services

The chatbot is currently available in English and isiZulu, but in a bid to make it more accessible, Setswana and isiXhosa support will be added soon.
