The primary focus is always on the bride and groom, who are celebrating one of the most significant days of their lives.

We all know the story of the classic "Bridezilla", but it's supposed to be the perfect day for the couple.

Although it is such a special day, it is also expensive.

According to Sanlam, the average cost of a South African wedding ranges from R70,000 to R80,000.

That cost can go up exponentially in a short amount of time.

In recent years, couples getting married have opted out of creating wedding gift registries for guests and instead are choosing to ask for money if guests feel the need to present the couple with a gift.

This new wedding trend has sparked debate, with many arguing that asking for money instead of gifts at a wedding is unacceptable and tasteless.

Etiquette expert Mariah Grumet begs to differ.

Here are Grumet's tips:

  • Do not include your preference for cash or gifts on your wedding invitation.
  • Include the address of your wedding website and detail your registry preferences there.
  • Ask your family members, close friends or bridal party to spread the word.
  • Be specific about how the money will be spent.
  • Use a cash registry website and set out a box for cards at the reception.
  • Be sure to create a traditional registry, too.

While it seems like many are jumping on the cash wedding gift train, there is one specific request that is causing even more of a stir.

According to some people, it is acceptable to ask for a cash gift, but requesting one for a honeymoon fund is considered inappropriate.

British couple Chris Martin and Tasha White recently got married and wanted to spend their honeymoon in Mexico.

At their wedding reception, they had a 'tap-and-pay' QR code on display that read: "Don’t be tight, pay for our flight.”

The couple told The Daily Mail that their guests were completely on board with the system and loved the idea.

It also turns out that as the drinks were flowing, guests chose to tap multiple times and were very generous.

The couple have received mixed responses on social media, with some people calling the concept guache while others are all for it.

Some of the largest wedding planning websites and brands are sharing advice on how to establish a honeymoon fund or honeymoon registry.
