South Africans fondly refer to the tighthead lock as the hardest man in rugby or by his nickname 'Elizabedi'.

He is the most capped Springbok player, with 137 to his name, and has been awarded the title of South Africa's Rugby Player of the Year multiple times.

Eben Etzebeth is considered to be somewhat of a national hero.
